They entered the house and saw the child with his
mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped
him. Then they opened their treasure chests and
gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Matthew 2:11

Gold, Frankincense & Myrrh

Incense has been employed in worship by Christians since antiquity. The smoke of burning incense may be seen as a symbol of the prayer of the faithful rising to heaven.

“Let my prayer be directed as incense in thy sight: the lifting up of my hands,
as evening sacrifice.” ~ Psalm 141 verse 2

Incense is a sacramental used to venerate, bless, and sanctify. Its smoke conveys a sense of mystery and awe. It is a reminder of the sweet-smelling presence of our Lord. Its use adds a feeling of solemnity to the service. The visual imagery of the smoke and the smell reinforce the transcendence of the service, linking Heaven with Earth, allowing us to enter into the presence of God.

The offering of an incense is a generous and beautiful rite. The bright grains
of incense are laid upon the red-hot charcoal, the censer is swung, and the fragrant smoke rises in clouds. In the rhythm and the sweetness there is a musical quality. It is a pouring out of unwithholding love. Incense smoke symbolically purifies all that it touches.

“And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints,
ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand” ~ Revelation 5:8

Incense was a highly valuable commodity in ancient times. A gift of incense was something to be prized. Frankincense and Myrrh, along with Gold were
the gifts given to Jesus after his birth.

“And another angel came and stood at the altar with a
golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle
with the prayers of the saints.” ~ Revelations 8:3

Incense Resins

Incense was a highly valuable commodity in ancient times. A gift of incense was something to be prized. The trading of incense and spices provided the economic basis for the famed 1,500 mile long Middle Eastern Incense Route, which flourished from the third century BC to the second century AD. This route was traversed with caravans of camels beginning in Yemen, crossing Saudi Arabia and Jordan and ending in today’s Israeli port of Gaza. Aromatics from Yemen, Dhofar and luxury goods from India brought wealth to the kingdoms of Arabia.

“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with
Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him and when they had
opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense
and myrrh.” ~ Matthew 2:11

Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh 500 shekels, and of sweet
smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, 250, and 250 of aromatic
calamus, and 500 of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary,
and a hint of olive oil. And you shall make of these a sacred anointing
oil blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil.

Exodus 30:23-25

Aromatic Oils

Even though essential oils are a somewhat modern phenomenon, it seems the traditions of using naturally derived aromatic oils has a long history in Christianity. These aromatic oils have been used in religious sacraments for millenium.

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Take fragrant spices-gum resin, onycha and
galbanum and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts and make a
fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer.’ ”~ Exodus 30:34:35

With such a long history it is no surprise that today, Frankincense & Myrrh are called the Kings of essential oils. The distinct, captive aromas can add another dimension to your service and prayers.

In times past the holy anointing oil formed an integral part of the ordination of the priesthood, as well as in the consecration of holy items. The primary purpose of anointing with the holy anointing oil was to sanctify, to set the anointed person or object apart as “holy”. Today the use of holy anointing oil has continued as part of a devotional practice.

“And spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil,
and for the sweet incense.” ~ Exodus 35:28

and consecrate it and all its furniture,
so that it may become holy
